It’s hard to write about yourself!
Whether you’re applying to college, writing a cover letter, creating a dating profile, or preparing a public speech, telling your own story is nerve-wracking.
Why? Because these are all acts of marketing, and you’re a person, not a product.
But let’s take college essays as an example. College applications are fundamentally an exercise in marketing. And just like any good piece of marketing, the numbers (grades) matter, but the story matters even more. If you can reach someone emotionally, they’ll remember you. That’s why college essays account for 25% of an application (CollegeVine).
My Story
Marketing myself never came easy for me.
When I was 17, writing my own college essays, the timing could not have been worse. I was burnt-out, crabby, with shoulder-length tangled hair that a bird once tried to make a nest out of (yes, really). I had no desire to sound ‘fake’.
The prompt: Why do you want to go to this school?
My response: “Why the hell should I?”
Oh, I thought I was clever. My essays were horrible. Luckily, a great writer and a friend of the family sat me down and coached me through the process.
She told me that essays were the only factor a college admissions department has to really get to know your personality. Grades, extracurriculars, those are just bullet points.
After she coached me through it, I got into my dream school - USC’s Screenwriting program - where I made my writing career.
